Nursing Professional Governance Organization

Nursing Professional Governance at UVA Community Health

At UVA Community Health, our Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) provides a dynamic framework that supports and amplifies the empowered voice of nursing. NPGO promotes a culture of collaboration and shared decision-making between nurses and interdisciplinary teams to drive measurable outcomes and deliver a remarkable patient experience within a safe, caring, and quality-focused environment.

NPGO is comprised of nursing team members from all levels of the organization — including direct care providers and nursing leaders — who come together to shape and influence nursing practice. Rooted in our Professional Practice Model, this governance structure empowers members with accountability and authority in decisions related to patient care delivery, professional practice standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Through NPGO, team members work in partnership with nursing leadership to:

  • Develop and implement practice standards
  • Monitor and enhance the quality of care
  • Support ongoing team member development
  • Engage in community outreach efforts aligned with our mission, vision, and values
  • Recognize and celebrate the contributions of nursing

Each member’s contribution is valued, and professional growth is actively supported. Annual goals are developed in alignment with the organization’s strategic direction to guide nursing practice and improve outcomes across the health system.

Nursing and support team members from all areas of UVA Community Health — hospitals, clinics, and medical practices — actively participate in NPGO. This inclusive approach strengthens alignment, fosters meaningful engagement, and ensures the successful implementation of key nursing initiatives across our entire organizational footprint.
